Coaching interest thread: Pot Limit Omaha/8
« on: June 30, 2011, 05:00:09 PM »
This post has been updated!

I play primarily Pot Limit O8, six-handed or nine-handed ring games, with a lot No Limit O8. In the past I have experience with Limit O8 cash and all forms of O8 STT with moderate success. I can confidently share my expertise in all forms of the game.

Please post questions here or send a PM if you are interesting in learning Omaha/8.

My credentials:

2011 WCOOP $215 NLO8 8th place

Successful buy-a-piece thread for the event here: http://pokermanila.com/index.php/topic,6356.msg108799.html#msg108799

This year's graph on PokerStars (gumasta)

Over two years' experience as an online grinder from micro stakes to small and medium stakes

From the original post:

I have done very well at this game for over 20 months. This year in 400 hours I have these results:

Until the Full Tilt Poker situation is resolved I am forced to grind what I have left on PokerStars ($295) and Party ($50) up to a level where I can make a decent income again.

Instead of asking for a backer, I am offering training in exchange for online money (PokerStars). I am happy to give basic training at zero cost and move on to advanced lessons at a rate TBD.

I will start with a trial offer for hand history review and critique.

Send hand histories for 50 selected hands and I will do a detailed review of them within two days. My initial pricing for 50 hands is 20 usd on PokerStars to gumasta (Quezon City, Philippines).

First send an e-mail to magutech@gmail.com and then I will reply to confirm acceptance. I will post a few sample hands here soon to give you a better idea of my coaching program.

Why try Omaha hi-lo split poker?

Hold'em games are no longer fishy as they were in 2005-2006. The 70 VPIP whale sitting at a 100NL table is a rarity if not an endangered species.

In Omaha 8 every day I see one or more fish that play far too many hands and call big bets drawing dead.

Full Tilt Poker $0.25/$0.50 Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Lo - 6 players
DeucesCracked Poker Videos Hand History Converter

UTG: $49.25
MP: $17.85
CO: $40.95
Hero (BTN): $54.05
SB: $50.85
BB: $120.15

Pre Flop: ($0.75) Hero is BTN with 5 6 3 A
1 fold, MP raises to $1.75, 1 fold, Hero calls $1.75, 2 folds

Flop: ($4.25) 6 2 4 (2 players)
MP bets $4.25, Hero calls $4.25

Turn: ($12.75) 7 (2 players)
MP bets $11.85 all in, Hero calls $11.85

River: ($36.45) 8 (2 players - 1 is all in)

Final Pot: $36.45
MP shows 2 K A K (HI: a pair of Kings; LO: 7,6,4,2,A)
Hero shows 5 6 3 A (HI: a straight, Eight high; LO: 6,4,3,2,A)
Hero wins $17.35
Hero wins $17.30
(Rake: $1.80)

Full Tilt Poker $0.50/$1 No Limit Omaha Hi/Lo - 5 players
DeucesCracked Poker Videos Hand History Converter

Hero (UTG): $85.00
CO: $40.50
BTN: $187.05
SB: $36.30
BB: $171.55

Pre Flop: ($1.50) Hero is UTG with A 2 K 6
Hero raises to $3.50, CO calls $3.50, 1 fold, SB calls $3, BB calls $2.50

Flop: ($14.00) J Q T (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero checks, CO checks

Turn: ($14.00) 3 (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets $14, CO raises to $37 all in, SB folds, BB folds, Hero calls $23

River: ($88.00) 7 (2 players - 1 is all in)

Final Pot: $88.00
Hero shows A 2 K 6 (HI: a straight, Ace high)
CO shows A 9 8 4 (HI: a straight, Queen high)
Hero wins $85.00
(Rake: $3.00)

This happens at every level in all games from cash to SNG and MTT, limit, pot-limit or no-limit, micro stakes to $100 buy-in.

If you want to know how to win huge pots where you have a dominating advantage, and do this again and again while avoiding coolers and tough decisions, this is the game for you.

It takes study and experience to master the finer nuances of the game, but when you reach a moderate level of competence, consistent winnings are assured.

For someone who's NEVER played Omaha, what do you need us to do?

Play a few hands first? How much BR to set aside? Software you would want us to have ready?

If you've never played at all then I will send you some links to reading materials and start off at PLAY money and the MICRO NANO stakes to get a feel for the game and learn basic starting hands and common situations.

Poker tracking software is a good long-term investment but not at all necessary if you're starting small. If you have $20 or $40 you can afford to lose while learning then you can play the smallest limit games or even micro SNG and $5 buy-in pot limit full ring.

For $10 buy-in ring games I think you can afford to invest $100 and play for a long time just by being selective and tight, and that will give you enough experience to start winning and slowly building up a bankroll. I originally had starting capital of $50 plus freerolls and if I had to do it over I would choose micro stakes O8 including SNG (but I'd also play some LHE for more volume).

If you are asking whether I am currently coaching any student, no, I am not. I believe I am well qualified in this field and it won't take a big investment for you to get a sample of my skills.

Live coaching is an option but I'd prefer to establish your knowledge base and learning style first through back-and-forth Q&A before going into live sessions or a long-term tutoring plan.

I use Hold'em (with Omaha) Manager. http://www.holdemmanager.com/store/downloads-manuals.php

I used some of my PartyPoker funds to get the small stakes version and upgraded later on to the professional version. There are promos available to get a free license by playing on some sites. You can buy the small stakes for either Hold'em or Omaha and upgrade later. There is a free trial for 15 days if you've never used it on your computer.

Omaha 8 questions thread here: http://pokermanila.com/index.php/topic,6431.msg109728.html#msg109728

I'll answer any questions you have about the game.

If anyone is interested in learning O8 at micro stakes, I can accept a small number of students. I will try to coach you until you are a winning player and help you move up stakes. If you have a tracker (PT/HM) then I can teach you for a percentage of your winnings in an agreed upon number of hands. (No charge if you make no profit.) Otherwise I'll charge an hourly rate to be determined by specific needs.

Mods, if a formal coaching thread belongs in another subforum, I can create a new thread.

Interested in the PLO coaching, started playing 6 handed at stars .02/.05,

Send me a message with your preferred form of IM or e-mail, and a description of your playing ability (and weaknesses), history, goals and experience in learning the game.

I can do a lot of basic training in PLO and even in some other games, but I specialize more in O8.  Best schedule for me would be afternoons, preferably on Tuesday to Thursday if possible.

Both PLO and O8 are part of mixed games (8-game, and HORSE for O8). If you want to get into the mixed games that run on PS, I can give you advice on the basics.

In my observation, O8 is one of the games that many people play terribly at any level. Having an edge in the O8 round of a mixed game can win you a lot of money.

you can only use 2 out of the 4 cards you're holding.

plus, you cannot use 1 card for one card flush/straight. dapat 2 cards lagi gamit mo.

if you treat omaha like holdem, you're bound to lose. players who "love to see the flop" usually do good at omaha.

on the hand you posted:
amir570 had the full house 6c 7s - 6s 7h 6d
while arodof1973 only had the straight Jc 10c - 9c 7h 8c
